Summary: The relationship between schools and society is fundamental to prepare people committed to the construction of global citizenship. It is interesting to know how skills are developed in school to train students to participate as active and committed citizens. The objective of this study was to know how to approach the theoretical and practical learning of participation in different subjects of a secondary education curriculum. To achieve this, a qualitative analysis methodology was applied to texts in which the value of participation appears specifically or indirectly. The results point to a clear fact: A secondary education curriculum presents an important objective which is to make citizens capable of actively participating in society. However this objective is not adequately developed in the contents and assessable standards of the different subjects.
