However, in the last years, because of the demands in terms of support and orientation on the part of the European Higher Education Area, and thanks to different types of experiences conducted at some Spanish universities, it undergoes a process of revitalization. This paper goes deep into the peer tutoring system advantages and disadvantages, in particular when used as strategy of orientation with new students.La tutoría entre iguales es aquella que implica a estudiantes como tutores de sus propios compañeros, ya sean estos del mismo curso que el de su tutor o de cursos inferiores. Es una modalidad de tutoría que goza de gran tradición en las universidades anglosajonas, pero que apenas había sido utilizada en nuestro país. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, a partir de exigencias en materia de apoyo y orientación del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior, y gracias a distintos tipos de experiencias que se han llevado a cabo en algunas universidades españolas, vive un proceso de revitalización.
