Summary: This work problematizes theoretical reflections on social control, by means of the powers instituted in capitalist societies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It focuses on the shift to have occurred in old Europe from punishment by physical torture to the emergence of modern prisons. In societies increasingly invaded by the values of the capitalist system, power is exerted by means of machines and technologies which directly organize culture and subjectivity (in communication systems, information networks, etc.) as well as bodies (in well-being systems, monitored leisure activities, etc.) with the aim of inducing a state of alienation.
