Summary: This article reflects on the consequences that can be derived from the current war in Ukraine, the risk involved in fragmenting the future international system into opposing blocs, and the need for the EU to define its own strategy in defence of its own interests. In the first place, the divergence of strategic interests between the two shores of the Atlantic is analysed to see, then, the consequences of the lack of definition of the objectives pursued in the current war by the western allies and the internal tensions that emerge between them. Next, the ideological interpretation that is offered about the nature of the conflict is discussed. Finally, the argument for the European Union not to incur in a strategic subordination that would lead to the fragmentation of the international system into blocs is proposed.
