Summary: The learning of students has been the subject of several investigations, in this order of ideas regarding math-ematics, a lack of motivation has been observed in students due to the strategies and traditional teaching models of teachers, so the general objective was to diagnose the learning of mathematics in eighth grade students of General Basic Education, developed under a mixed research approach, with descriptive scope, having as sample 26 students of eighth year of General Basic Education and 2 teachers of the mathematics area, for the collection of information the techniques survey to the students and interview to the teachers were applied, the analysis of the results it was found that sometimes the comprehension of mathematical contents has been complicated (46%); Sometimes the curricular planning of mathematics has playful contents (42%); therefore it can be concluded that it is necessary to change the methodology for teaching mathematics in Basic Education and to change traditional methods, improving interest and active participation in the different academic activities, improving their learning.
