Summary: In a context of change, security and defence are becoming increasingly important in Europe. The desire of European Union to position itself as an international player has required the implementation of policies which, although supported by the Treaties, had been continually postponed by the lack of agreement on national priorities in these fields. The weakening of the transatlantic link, which is fundamental to understand defence, and the opportunity to make progress on a properly European strategic definition have boosted a defence policy that is still seriously deficient. The existence of a high-intensity armed conflict in the eastern part of the continent has revitalized relations between the European Union and NATO, which calls for a more complete cohesion between members on both sides of the Atlantic. The serious consequences of this conflict encourage discus-sions to be relegated to the need to establish large-scale geostrategic positions, which inevitably bind defence-related organizations
