Summary: The present investigation was carried out to determine the influence of prenatal control on the level of maternal mortality. The work was carried out in five hospital centers, which were: Maternidad Enrique Sotomayor and Hospital Guayaquil in the city of Guayaquil; and the León Becerra hospitals in the Milagro canton, the Salinas Cantonal Hospital, and the Daule Cantonal Hospital. For the evaluations, the Data Collection Sheet of the Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil was ob-tained. The variables were maternal mortality and the number of prenatal check-ups. The research was non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational. The results were: The maternal mortality index in Guayas was 102 (100,000 live births). All the deaths occurred at the Sotomayor Maternity Hospital, because extreme cases are sent there. The greater the num-ber of prenatal controls, the cases of maternal mortality are reduced, thus with zero control there were 41% of maternal deaths, and with 4 it was 7%. This is determined by the connection and regression coefficients, in their order, of -0.974**, and -4.6**. The highest mortality/prenatal control index of 5.36% corresponded to the marginal urban area. The marital status of the patients has nothing to do with the mortality rates on prenatal control. The primiparous pregnant women and the large multiparous women presented the highest rates of maternal mortality over prenatal control, respectively of 4.97 and 12.73%. The extreme ages of pregnant women presented the highest rates of maternal mortality/prenatal check-ups, thus from 12 to 15 years it was 13, from 36 to 39 years it was 8, and 40 and over years it was 83.
