The purpose of this paper is to give a first picture about the status of San Juan’s prisons during the 1940s, prior to the earthquake that turned the city into ruins on January the 15th of 1944. Through the analysis of sources stored in the Province’s General Archive and the Penal and Penitentiary Journal dated to 1942, it is intended to assess the impact that national punitive reforms had on the provincial prison. In addition, it is expected to contribute to the prison history of the province San Juan and aid in comprehending the impact of said national projects and their compliance in the provincial territories.A fines de la década del 30 y principios del 40 el Estado provincial sanjuanino comenzó a manifestar cierto interés por el mejoramiento de las instituciones de castigo y corrección. En consecuencia, intentó implementar las medidas propuestas por el gobierno nacional planteadas a través de la Ley de Organización Carcelaria y Régimen de la Pena sancionada en 1933. El propósito de este trabajo es brindar un primer panorama sobre la situación carcelaria en la provincia de San Juan a principios de la década de 1940, momento previo al terremoto que dejó en ruinas la ciudad el 15 de enero de 1944. A través del análisis de fuentes contenidas en el Archivo General de la Provincia y la Revista Penal y Penitenciaria correspondiente al año 1942 se busca valorar el impacto que tuvieron los proyectos nacionales de reforma punitiva en la cárcel provincial.
