Summary: In the late 30s and early 40s the San Juan’s provincial State began to manifest an interest for the improvement of punishment and correction institutions, in order to adapt to the new measures proposed by the government with the law of Prison Organization and Regime of Penalty sanctioned in 1933. The purpose of this paper is to give a first picture about the status of San Juan’s prisons during the 1940s, prior to the earthquake that turned the city into ruins on January the 15th of 1944. Through the analysis of sources stored in the Province’s General Archive and the Penal and Penitentiary Journal dated to 1942, it is intended to assess the impact that national punitive reforms had on the provincial prison. In addition, it is expected to contribute to the prison history of the province San Juan and aid in comprehending the impact of said national projects and their compliance in the provincial territories.
