Thus, compared to the linear economy («take-make-dispose»), a more competitive model is presented with a high environmental component translated into aspects such as sustainability, efficiency in the use of resources or its concern for climate change. The circular economy is based on two basic aspects. Firstly, that the value of products, materials and resources are maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and secondly, that the generation of waste is minimized. Reducing, reusing, recycling, substituting, preserving and valuing are concepts to be applied to the most diverse fields and that will mark a gradual transition of the global economy. This study will analyse the basic keys to the reasons for these changes and how their gradual implementation is taking place.La conciencia medioambiental de la sociedad ha conllevado nuevas visiones acerca de cómo orientar el modelo económico. Así, frente a la economía lineal («extraer, hacer, tirar») se presenta un modelo más competitivo y con un alto componente medioambiental traducido en aspectos como la sostenibilidad, la eficiencia en el uso de los recursos o su preocupación por el cambio climático y las emisiones. Con ello surge la economía circular, la cual se sustenta en dos aspectos básicos como son, por un lado, el que el valor de los productos, los materiales y los recursos se mantenga en la economía durante el mayor tiempo posible y, por otro lado, en la que se reduzca al mínimo la generación de residuos. Reducir, reutilizar, reciclar, sustituir, preservar o valorar son conceptos por aplicarse a los más diversos ámbitos y que van a marcar una transición paulatina de la economía global.
