Summary: The environmental awareness of society has led to new visions about how to guide the economic model. Thus, compared to the linear economy («take-make-dispose»), a more competitive model is presented with a high environmental component translated into aspects such as sustainability, efficiency in the use of resources or its concern for climate change. The circular economy is based on two basic aspects. Firstly, that the value of products, materials and resources are maintained in the economy for as long as possible, and secondly, that the generation of waste is minimized. Reducing, reusing, recycling, substituting, preserving and valuing are concepts to be applied to the most diverse fields and that will mark a gradual transition of the global economy. This study will analyse the basic keys to the reasons for these changes and how their gradual implementation is taking place.
