Summary: The term competence has strongly dominated the process of continuous training of teachers and students at all levels, the name is not new, but it deserves a new connotation as a key word in training programs. This article was conducted using the method of documentary or bibliographic review of documents published from 2017 onwards in the MEDLINE, LILACS, EBSCO databases among others and on the Scholar Google site, in total 44 documents were located and 33 were used for their timeliness and relevance in order to expose the need for the development of competencies in university students. The search engines were: higher education, competency-based education, professional competencies, meaningful learning. Concluding that higher education has achieved its goal of training competent, critical and creative professionals who are able to act and perform to solve real-life problems of varying complexity and similarity. To collaborate effectively with others to improve their quality of life and the lives of others.
