Nevertheless, transnational lists appear as an unrealistic, even antithetical, idea regarding the concept of political representation from a federalist perspective. However, several dysfunctions of the European Parliament election process must be solved before implementing transnational lists at EU level. Only then can the European elections really be considered as European.La adopción de un sistema de listas transnacionales y la creación de una circunscripción única transeuropea para la elección de los miembros del Parlamento Europeo es una posibilidad que ha estado sobre la mesa en las dos últimas décadas. Con ello se pretende lograr un doble objetivo: por un lado, incrementar la implicación de la ciudadanía y, por otro, combatir la desafección popular hacia el proyecto de construcción europeo. No obstante, las listas transnacionales aparecen como un elemento extraño, incluso antitético, al concepto de representación política desde una óptica federalista. Sin embargo, antes de implementar un sistema de listas transnacionales como este, es necesario solventar las disfuncionalidades de las que adolecen las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo.
