Summary: The availability of transnational electoral lists and the creation of an EU-wide constituency for European elections have long been discussed over the last two decades. Such innovations are intended to pursue a double objective: increasing citizen’s participation and fighting against people’s disaffection with the European integration process. Nevertheless, transnational lists appear as an unrealistic, even antithetical, idea regarding the concept of political representation from a federalist perspective. However, several dysfunctions of the European Parliament election process must be solved before implementing transnational lists at EU level. Only then can the European elections really be considered as European.
