Summary: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is considered in developed countries as the leading cause of blindness in people of working age. DR is the second leading cause of blindness in Latin America, after cataract. On the other hand, diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently one of the most serious problems facing public health worldwide. DR is associated with the presence of different risk factors that determine both its emergence and the increase in its severity: the duration and type of DM, poor metabolic control, pregnancy, a history of high blood pressure, kidney disease , obesity, hyperlipidemia, tobacco use and genetic factors. The development of this review has been done under a documentary research model, so it was essential to carry out some literature searches that were available both in physical and digital form. The bibliographic resources considered for its review corresponded to: scientific articles, systematic reviews, clinical cases (reports), conference proceedings or abstracts, postgraduate and doctoral theses, books and book sections, medical publications of the specialty (infectology), bulletins o informative brochures and official publications of recognized organizations, institutions, professional associations and competent entities found on their own websites or those of third parties, as well as other types of documentary and audiovisual sources with scientific bases, on the subject of study. The prevalence of the disease in the cases presented is consistent with other international studies, regarding the relationship between retinopathy and diabetes mellitus. In this context, in the case studies that address type 2 diabetes mellitus, in some results the prevalence was 24.6%, in others 16.4%, which is consistent with the literature that concludes that at least 20% prevails in this type of diabetes.
