The theory of the neurobiologist Antonio Damasio’s somatic marker has become one of the most relevant in this revitalization of the role of emotions. The theory establishes the existence of an internal system of preferences in the human being that offers a guide about which actions are best suited to been applied to political decision making. However, if it is possible to affirm that politics must consist of something other than rational mastery over passions, an aporia will arise since politics itself will be denied. The present paper shows that the emphasis on the emotional side of the human being is a new version of the old idea that sees politics as a reflection of evil and that considers the political activity as necessary insofar as evil exists. The stress on emotions, therefore, seems doomed to eliminate the politics.La creciente importancia que el estudio de las emociones ha adquirido, con contribuciones de la biología, la neurología e incluso la genética, ha provocado que para algunos se haya resuelto el conflicto tradicional con la razón a favor de aquellas. La teoría del marcador somático del neurobiólogo Antonio Damasio se ha convertido en una de las más relevantes dentro de esta revitalización del papel de las emociones. Al ser una teoría que parte de la existencia de un sistema interno de preferencias en el ser humano, sus conclusiones respecto a qué acciones se ajustan mejor al mismo se ha querido aplicar a la toma de decisiones políticas. Esto podría hacer pensar que la política ha de estar dominada por lo emocional o que ha de consistir en otra cosa que el dominio racional sobre las pasiones. Se sostendrá que se llegaría así a una aporía en la que se niega la política misma. El presente trabajo muestra que el énfasis en el aspecto emocional es una nueva versión de la vieja idea de que la política es reflejo del mal y solo será necesaria en tanto que este exista.
