Summary: Since 2013, Brazil has faced a political and institutional crisis that reflects a historical difficulty in the proper exercise of citizenship within the national society. This article seeks to clarify some of the existing obstacles for citizenship in Brazil and how they relate to the current political crisis, how the national political class makes use of these obstacles, and how civil society is responsible for it. A brief explanation is given about the slave model used in Brazil, patrimonialism, colonelism and patronage, and how this political culture has damaged the way citizenship is exercised at the national level.
