Covert ethnography has been a highly criticized technique throughout the history of social sciences. Currently, there is a growing debate about how ethical this technique can be and under what postulates the dilemmas faced before, during and after the field work are examined. The criminological covert ethnography has, due to the particularity of its study phenomena, a special emphasis on this whole issue. All of which leads us to weigh how necessary this technique is and if there is a possibility of exercising it in an ethical way. Finally, it is considered that the disparity between what is ethical or not in the field will depend on multiple factors and that ethical committees are still institutionalized and highly bureaucratic agents that become ineffective. |
