Summary: The railway sector has traditionally been linked to the exercise of public powers by the States, so the liberalization process, with the consequent loss of influence over the sector and the national flag companies that managed it, has been long and tortuous . The liberalization of the railroad at European level tries to be a means for the achievement of the essential purpose: the improvement in the provision of the service. The impact in Spain of the liberalization of passenger transport in December 2020 will be important, as it has excellent high-speed infrastructure that will make the commercial exploitation of some important corridors desirable, so competition between operators is expected to be real from the beginning and suppose the achievement of the mentioned objective, as it has happened in other countries: an improvement of the service and, consequently, a benefit for the citizens.
