Internet y género: ¿Una herramienta de empoderamiento para las mujeres?

This paper analyzes the extent to which women benefit from the use of "the Internet" taking into account both the gender gap in access and use of the Internet and the virtual reproduction of practices that derive from a culture of inequality and violence against women.The analysis was divided into three sections. The first section addresses the importance of access and usage of the Internet as an indispensable tool for exercising human rights and inclusion of disadvantaged groups. The second section focuses on the advantages provided by this tool for the empowerment and advancement of women as well as determining what women are mainly using the Internet for, while identifying gender gap as the main obstacle to access and use the Internet. Finally, the third section focuses on the repetition of gender stereotypes and violence against women through the Internet as factors derived from a culture of gender inequity and violence -that still exist outside the Internet-and itsimpact on how women use the Internet.The analysis shows how, in spite of the advantages offered by the Internetas an instrument of collaboration and empowerment, social norms and gender stereotypes limit women's use of the Internet to only entertainment and consumption of services -instead of using it as a tool for their own empowerment and participation in socialand political topics.

En lo que respecta al primer apartado, este aborda la importancia del acceso y uso de Internet como herramienta indispensable para el ejercicio de algunos derechos humanos, así como un potencializador de la participación de grupos desfavorecidos; el segundo apartado, se enfoca en las ventajas que representa esta herramienta en el empoderamiento y avance de las mujeres, centrándose en la brecha de género como el principal obstáculo en el acceso y uso de este instrumento, así como en conocer los principales usos que las mujeres dan a Internet; y finalmente el tercer apartado, se centra en la reproducción de estereotipos de género y violencia contra la mujer en Internet, como factores que se derivan de una cultura de desigualdad y violencia de género que persiste fuera de Internet, y que impacta negativamente en el uso que las mujeres dan a una herramienta tan importante como lo es Internet.En ese sentido, este análisis muestra cómo frente a las ventajas que ofrece Internet como instrumento de participación y empoderamiento, las normas sociales y estereotipos de género condicionan el uso que las mujeres hacen del mismo, mostrando el uso prioritario de Internet como medio de entretenimiento y consumo, y en menor medida, como un instrumento a través del cual las mujeres se ven posibilitadas a empoderarse y participar en los debates sociales y políticos.2017text (article)application/pdfhttps://dialnet.unirioja.es/servlet/oaiart?codigo=7158952(Revista) ISSN 1851-3069Revista Electrónica del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas y Sociales Ambrosio Lucas Gioja, ISSN 1851-3069, Nº. 19, 2017, pags. 37-54spaLICENCIA DE USO: Los documentos a texto completo incluidos en Dialnet son de acceso libre y propiedad de sus autores y/o editores.
