Morover, the shared water management will affect the relationships between the states involved, their ecosystems and citizens. As we shall see, the increasing environmental awareness of international law was reflected in the Albufeira agreement.Cuando se cumplen veinte años del Convenio de Albufeira parece necesario echar la vista atrás para constatar cómo ha evolucionado la gestión compartida de las aguas entre España y Portugal, tomando como referencia la propia evolución del derecho internacional en este ámbito. La importancia de la gestión de las cuencas compartidas queda patente si tenemos en cuenta que al menos el 40% de la población mundial vive en alguna de ellas. La forma más o menos coordinada y cooperativa en que se gestionen los recursos hídricos compartidos afectará indudablemente a las propias relaciones de los Estados implicados, además de a los ecosistemas implicados y, cómo no, a sus respectivos ciudadanos.
