Among these paths are the coordination Regulations and the Directive´s model, which is based on the free movement of healthcare services and includes the freedom for the patient to go to another Member State in order to receive those services. The patient has to pay the treatment upfront and then claim eligible costs from the Member State of affiliation. The autonomous administrations are the real protagonists of the new model. The Directive creates a new and complex legal framework of obligations for them.Nos proponemos en este trabajo analizar algunos de los efectos de la Directiva sobre asistencia sanitaria transfronteriza. Existen varias vías legales para acceder a los tratamientos sanitarios en otro Estado miembro, la de los reglamentos comunitarios sobre coordinación de los sistemas de seguridad social y la de la nueva Directiva, que está basada directamente en la libre prestación de servicios e incluye también la libertad del paciente para recibir su tratamiento en otro Estado. El paciente debe pagar dicho tratamiento y después reclamar su coste al Estado miembro de afiliación. Las Administraciones autonómicas son las auténticas protagonistas del nuevo modelo.
