Summary: The aim of this work is to analyse some of the effects of the Cross-border healthcare Directive. There are various legal paths to access healthcare in another Member State. Among these paths are the coordination Regulations and the Directive´s model, which is based on the free movement of healthcare services and includes the freedom for the patient to go to another Member State in order to receive those services. The patient has to pay the treatment upfront and then claim eligible costs from the Member State of affiliation. The autonomous administrations are the real protagonists of the new model. The Directive creates a new and complex legal framework of obligations for them.
