Summary: Women’s interrupted careers are a challenge for equality in the field of Social Security and a real challenge to ensure the economic independence of women —especially during old age—, when women tend to face a higher risk of poverty than men. The aim of this paper is to provide a global overview of the causes of the persistent gender gap in the Social Security System, and to analyze the main strategies and corrective mechanisms put in place to compensate the greater dedication to unpaid work by women, and to ensure women’s ability to build up pension entitlements.
