Based on these questions, the aim of this paper is to analyze how and with what purposes memory and identity are articulated as mechanisms of construction and assignment of individual and collective meanings in contemporary societies. I argue that, on the one hand, in an existential dimension, the narratives of memory and identity grant individuals a sense of permanence and durability. A kind of safe place, opposed to the frenetic pace of contemporary life. On the other hand, in a political dimension, these narratives appear as mechanisms of construction of symbolic boundaries, rights and legal concepts that support social hierarchies, power relations and processes of social inclusion and exclusion.Keywords: right to memory, identity, transitional justice.Por que cultivamos tanto a memória? Por que o passado se tornou objeto de tantas disputas? O que motiva a busca por registrar – e, nesse sentido, não perder – o instante presente? Partindo dessas questões, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar de que forma e com quais finalidades a memória e a identidade são articuladas como mecanismos de construção e de atribuição de sentidos individuais e coletivos nas sociedades contemporâneas. Argumento que, por um lado, em uma dimensão existencial, as narrativas da memória e da identidade conferem uma sensação de permanência e durabilidade aos indivíduos. Uma espécie de lugar seguro, ao qual se pode recorrer em oposição ao ritmo frenético da vida contemporânea.
