Summary: Why do we care so much about memory? Why has the past become subject of so many disputes? What motivates the search for recording – and, in this sense, not losing – the present moment? Based on these questions, the aim of this paper is to analyze how and with what purposes memory and identity are articulated as mechanisms of construction and assignment of individual and collective meanings in contemporary societies. I argue that, on the one hand, in an existential dimension, the narratives of memory and identity grant individuals a sense of permanence and durability. A kind of safe place, opposed to the frenetic pace of contemporary life. On the other hand, in a political dimension, these narratives appear as mechanisms of construction of symbolic boundaries, rights and legal concepts that support social hierarchies, power relations and processes of social inclusion and exclusion. Keywords: right to memory, identity, transitional justice.
