This article discusses the potential that the prison as an institution of social exclusion can exert in reducing recidivism and re-incarceration. The institutional and social barriers that limit the influence of prison on social reintegration and desistance from crime are presented. Based on a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with inmates and staff from two prisons in Mexico City, it is concluded that the role of social reintegration goes beyond the institutional scope of the prison. Alternatives to improve the penitentiary treatment and to link the treatment with the post-release phase are also presented in this study, seeking with this to strengten the function of social re-integration of offendersLa función de la reinserción social en México es delegada en su mayoría al sistema penitenciario. Este artículo discute el potencial que la prisión, al ser una institución de exclusión social, puede ejercer en la reducción de la reincidencia delictiva. Se presentan las barreras institucionales y sociales que limitan la influencia de la prisión sobre los procesos de desistencia delictiva y reinserción social. Basado en un estudio cualitativo empleando entrevistas profundas con internos y personal de dos prisiones en la Ciudad de México, se concluye que la función de la reinserción social rebasa el alcance institucional de la prisión.
