Summary: The role of social reintegration in Mexico is largely delegated to the prison system. This article discusses the potential that the prison as an institution of social exclusion can exert in reducing recidivism and re-incarceration. The institutional and social barriers that limit the influence of prison on social reintegration and desistance from crime are presented. Based on a qualitative study using in-depth interviews with inmates and staff from two prisons in Mexico City, it is concluded that the role of social reintegration goes beyond the institutional scope of the prison. Alternatives to improve the penitentiary treatment and to link the treatment with the post-release phase are also presented in this study, seeking with this to strengten the function of social re-integration of offenders
