Summary: In this study we created an approximation to a Legislative Professionalism Index (IPL) for Mexican state congresses. We use previous designs of professionalism indexes from other countries, in particularly from the United States. We use a statistical technique Factor Analysis to estimate the Index, which included ten variables related to the formation, the legislative activities and performance of the congresses, as well as socioeconomic variables for each state. The results show that the socioeconomic variables defi ne, in large extent, legislative professionalization, rather than intrinsic variables of state congresses
