Since 2010 the Cuban government has been faced with the challenge of rescuing its economy and it means the self-employment is extended to various activities that were not performed before by these new “forms of economic management”. Various legal rules are responsible for meeting an old demand led to the recognition of those activities that were already doing, but did not have an explicit endorsement of the state institutions. All that brings the search for mechanisms with higher efficiency and viability, because is an aspiration of the official position of the State Government that the selfemployment represents 40% of the volume of the national economy. About some faces of self-employment, their visible successes and defeats in Cuban society, relates these lines.El “trabajo por cuenta propia” cobra fuerza en la sociedad cubana actual. Denominada de este modo, es una modalidad de empleo nacida en los años sesenta y que ha ido cobrando mayor auge a partir de la reforma constitucional de 1992. Desde el año 2010 el gobierno cubano ha tenido ante sí el reto de rescatar su economía y en medio de ello el trabajo por cuenta propia se amplía a diversas actividades que no eran realizadas antaño por estas nuevas “formas de gestión económica”. Normas diversas se encargan de satisfacer una vieja demanda dirigida al reconocimiento de aquellas labores que ya se venían realizando, pero no contaban con un respaldo expreso de las instituciones estatales. Ello trae consigo la búsqueda de mecanismos con mayor eficiencia y viabilidad, pues se aspira según la postura oficial del Gobierno y el Estado que el trabajo por cuenta propia represente el 40% del volumen de la economía nacional.
