Summary: The “self-employment” is gaining strength in Cuban society nowadays. So called, is a form of employment born in the sixties and has become ever more popular since the constitutional reform of 1992. Since 2010 the Cuban government has been faced with the challenge of rescuing its economy and it means the self-employment is extended to various activities that were not performed before by these new “forms of economic management”. Various legal rules are responsible for meeting an old demand led to the recognition of those activities that were already doing, but did not have an explicit endorsement of the state institutions. All that brings the search for mechanisms with higher efficiency and viability, because is an aspiration of the official position of the State Government that the selfemployment represents 40% of the volume of the national economy. About some faces of self-employment, their visible successes and defeats in Cuban society, relates these lines.
