Summary: |
The following work is based on an analysis of "sustainable human development" (SHD) as a goal for society, also considering social, environmental and economic sustainability, all within the context of the Mercosur. To do so, it discusses concepts such as: economic growth, economic development, sustainable development and human development. The categories of gender and labor also feature, through their highlighting of the nexus between SHD and the fulfillment of human rights. The evolution of several specific indicators and variables defining SHD are discussed, such as the Human Development Index (HDI) and the UNDPs Gender Inequality Index (GII) within the scope of the Mercosur. An empirical analysis reveals that in general terms, a disparity exists among the countries in the Mercosur, with Paraguay in the most precarious position, in terms of its HDI, GII and GDP per capita, and Uruguay at the other end of the scale (in terms of GDP per capita and GII) or Argentina (HDI). The Mercosurs Strategic Plan for Social Action is
considered from the perspective of "gender" in terms of its development of public labor policies, based on the "principle of equal pay for equal work" (Focus VI Guideline 18). |
