Summary: This article is part of scientific research "What can education in prison?" developed in the academic master of human rights from the Federal University of Paraíba State, which examines the limits and possibilities of prison education for rebuilding the dignity of the prisoner in contrast to the historical determinism of the prison. The text deals with the current policy of education in prisons in Brazil, linking them with the new paradigms of public safety in the country, especially the new national guidelines for the provision of prison education published by the National Council for Criminal and Penitentiary Policy and the Council National Education.
