The text deals with the current policy of education in prisons in Brazil, linking them with the new paradigms of public safety in the country, especially the new national guidelines for the provision of prison education published by the National Council for Criminal and Penitentiary Policy and the Council National Education.Este trabalho é parte integrante da pesquisa �Que pode a educação na prisão?�, realizada em nível de mestrado junto ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Jurídicas da UFPB, área de concentração em direitos humanos, que investigou os limites e possibilidades da prática educativa nos cárceres brasileiros, no sentido de sua contribuição para a reconstrução da dignidade do apenado e pleno exercício da cidadania, na medida em que se apresenta como um conjunto de novas possibilidades em contraposição aos determinismos do contexto penitenciário.
