General System, as well as papers found in academic databases such as EBSCOHOST, JSTOR, LILACS, and Science Direct, limited to full text articles indexed according to database specific criteria, published in the period 1990 through 2009. Although there is broad conceptual treatment of health promotion in the literature, its implementation in the workplace and, therefore, its theoretical development, remain a challenge. This conclusion suggests that future
efforts should be redirected from the recognition of what the actual strategy “is” at present in terms of its application, towards the formulation of proposals that facilitate the implementation of “what should be” in terms of health promotion in the workplace.

Los datos reseñados y las reflexiones expresadas en este artículo se fundamentan en la revisión bibliográfica relacionada con promoción de la salud en los lugares de trabajo, seleccionada de fuentes producidas por organismos como la Organización Mundial de la Salud, la Organización Internacional del Trabajo, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud y el Sistema General de Riesgos Profesionales de Colombia, así como de artículos referidos en bases de datos reconocidas como EBSCOHOST, JSTOR, LILACS y Science Direct; estos últimos, filtrados considerando que fueran documentos arbitrados según criterios particulares de dichas bases, de texto completo y producidos durante el período comprendido entre 1990 y 2009, ambos inclusive.
