Summary: The objective of the paper is to present a review on the origins of workplace health promotion and on the advantages of implementing this strategy. The data and opinions expressed in the article are based on a review of the literature of the key term workplace health promotion. Data sources included those of the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Colombian Professional Risks General System, as well as papers found in academic databases such as EBSCOHOST, JSTOR, LILACS, and Science Direct, limited to full text articles indexed according to database specific criteria, published in the period 1990 through 2009. Although there is broad conceptual treatment of health promotion in the literature, its implementation in the workplace and, therefore, its theoretical development, remain a challenge. This conclusion suggests that future efforts should be redirected from the recognition of what the actual strategy “is” at present in terms of its application, towards the formulation of proposals that facilitate the implementation of “what should be” in terms of health promotion in the workplace.
