Summary: Gender as a social construction has played a determining role in the unequal power relations that have generated different dynamics of discrimination and violence throughout history. Although these situations occur in the daily lives of women and people with non-normative or diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, it is necessary to emphasize the war situation that has marked Colombian history.  Thus, gender-based violence is understood as a weapon of war that allows a scenario of analysis where the feminine is instrumentalized and objectified and the masculine is humiliated and denigrated; from a general and holistic conception. The purpose of this article is to make visible how the Colombian armed conflict has exacerbated gender-based violence, because it has fulfilled certain objectives within the framework of the confrontation, as a strategy to reaffirm the authority of the armed actors in the territory. Additionally, it reviews the concept of gender and the role of subordination that has been imposed on women because they are women. It also looks at the historical and legal development of gender-based violence at the domestic and international levels.
