Summary: Algorithmic transparency has gained special relevance in the context of information and communication because the use of algorithms in the media and platforms is absolutely widespread and integrated in all its aspects. The lack of transparency about the use of these mathematical tools together with the intrinsic characteristics of the algorithms have lead to negative effects in the context of journalism, such as the difficulty of fulfilling its function as watchdog and of the platforms contributing to the spread of disinformation, the censorship of content or the illegal exploitation of data. For this reason, the provisions that the European Union is adopting in terms of algorithmic transparency constitute progress in mitigating the risks of information manipulation and guaranteeing the rights of users.
