Summary: Human talent management is a critical challenge facing universities and higher education institutions around the world. Effective human talent management is fundamental to ensure academic and administrative quality, while maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly competitive labor market. This review article analyzes the human talent management models most commonly used in higher education institutions, as well as their advantages and disadvantages in the university environment, in order to identify the best practices and current trends in this field through a review of the literature. Several human talent management models are identified, including the competency model, the professional development model, the capability and development model, and the performance management model. The main components of each model are discussed, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, and how these could be applied in higher education institutions. In addition, the critical success factors in implementing a human talent management model are identified, and the barriers and challenges in implementing these models in higher education institutions are discussed. Higher education institutions face unique challenges in human resource management, such as the need to attract and retain highly qualified personnel, keep abreast of technological and educational advances, and react to changes in the global and local environment.
