Summary: This is a critical review of Cristina Lafont’s work, Democracy without Shortcuts. This paper deals with three of the issues addressed by Lafont in her book: the value of “mini-audiences” in the context of a radical crisis of representation, such as the one we are experiencing; the democratic problem posed by the intervention of the courts in the (final) decision of controversial matters of public interest (an intervention that the author emphatically encourages, in her work); and the limits of a vision that she proposes that reduces the role of citizens to an intervention aimed at presenting “challenges” against the decisions made by public authorities.
