Summary: The European Parliament is configured as an essential element of the representative democracy at the European level. Its functions have been widen since it has been shaped as a co-legislator, on an equal footing with the Council. This institution, which represents the European citizens, constitutes the essence of the democratic value on which the European Union is based. The European Parliament, which fulfills important functions, both from a legislative and control point of view, concretes the above-mentioned representative democracy at the Union level, which is combined with certain elements of direct democracy in order to achieve higher levels of democratization. The future of European democracy needs to maintain the same level of representative democracy improving other aspects such as the promotion of local democracy and the connection with European citizens.
