Summary: This article aims to characterize the migration from rural to urban areas in Ecuador. A qualitative methodological approach was applied, oriented on documentary research; Through this, it was possible to interpret and analyze previous scientific articles that served as a guide in the research approach. The investigation was carried out taking into account the follow-ing aspects: identification of the main aspects of the history and characteristics of migration from rural to urban areas in Ecuador, causes of migration from rural to urban areas in Ecuador and its consequences in the Ecuadorian nation. Results: 1.-Migration from rural to urban areas in Ecuador has a long history that worsens in the 70s related to the process of devel-opment and growth of the main cities of the country, leaving desolation and higher poverty rates in fields. 2.- The migratory phenomenon has multiple dimensions, it is mainly caused by the search for better quality and economic status, leaving a deep mark on the sending communities. 3.- The consequences occur both in the place of origin and in the place of desti-nation in the economic, social, as well as family and affective aspects. Conclusion: Migration in Ecuador has characteristics very similar to other Latin American countries; better job opportunities and remuneration are sought in cities, and access to services, which in rural areas are precarious, thus promoting migration.
