During the 19th century, such peculiarities disappeared according to the transformation that the structure of the State and the Royal House had undergone. Wealth and political power (usually obtained by advantageous means) were the only qualities that were needed to obtain that position. Without intending it, the study of gentlemen confronts us with the liberal utopia that defended the equality of citizens before the law and the issue of state corruption.Los gentileshombres de la casa real siempre habían constituido los servidores más emblemáticos de la Monarquía y el ejemplo de la cultura cortesana. Una educación humanista y la práctica de unos valores éticos y de subordinación caracterizaron a estos personajes. Durante el siglo XIX, tales peculiaridades desaparecieron de acuerdo con la transformación que había experimentado la estructura del Estado y de Casa Real. La riqueza y el poder político (normalmente obtenidos por medios ventajosos) fueron las únicas cualidades que se necesitaron para conseguir dicho cargo.
