However, its regulation contradicted the spirit and letter of the Coastal Law, which has conditioned its application and has generated contradictory court rulings. The unavoidable regulatory reform of this extension has been carried out through article 20 of Law 7/2021, of May 20, on Climate Change and Energy Transition and Royal Decree 668/2022, of August 1, modifying the General Coast Regulation. The purpose of this article isto explain and analyse this regulatory reform as well as several recent rulings on the matter.La prórroga extraordinaria de las concesiones de dominio público marítimo- terrestre otorgadas antes de la Ley de Costas de 1988, introducida por la Ley 2/2013 y desarrollada por el Reglamento General de Costas de 2014, constituyó el antídoto a la extinción generalizada de dichas concesiones prevista para julio del año 2018. Pero su regulación entraba en contradicción con el espíritu y la letra de la Ley de Costas, lo que ha condicionado su aplicación y ha generado fallos judiciales contradictorios. La ineludible reforma normativa de esta prórroga se ha llevado a cabo a través del art. 20 de la Ley 7/2021, de 20 de mayo, de Cambio Climático y Transición Energética y del Real Decreto 668/2022, de 1 de agosto, de modificación del Reglamento General de Costas.
