description
ntroduction: Maxillofacial trauma or injuries afflict several people, it seems to increase its prevalence and thus causes discomfort due to the discomfort that is caused in the social, economic environment in their environment. Objective: To determine the origin or cause of maxillofacial trauma in patients who come to the maxillofacial surgery service for treatment. Methods: 178 patients were selected for the analysis, who were attended and treated by Dr. Jorge Castro A in private health establishments in the city of Quito, 17 were women and 161 were men. In general, the patients who participated in the study were from the northeast of Ecuador, mainly from the provinces of: Esmeraldas, Carchi, Sucumbíos, Orellana, Napo, Pichincha. The necessary information for this research work was compiled by means of the investigation of clinical histories, study of tomographies and other examinations. Results: A total of 178 patients with maxillofacial trauma were evaluated, which presented a number of 262 fractures in general, which for the study methodology were classified in thirds, which were: lower, middle and upper third. It was observed that the male gender is much more prone to suffer these conditions especially in the age range of 20 to 35 years, the fracture of the middle third was the most prominent followed by fractures of the upper third and the most notorious mode of accident is the motorcycle with a considerable number of cases presented. Conclusions: the study shows that this type of traumatism affects much more males than females, especially in the age range of 20 to 35 years, the middle third due to its shape and anatomical structure is susceptible to injury at the time of suffering a trauma or impact, as demonstrated in this research. The motorcycle was the type of accident that was involved in more than half of the cases within the analysis, such cases being even more aggravated if the affected person was not wearing a helmet correctly and with the proper safety standards.
