Summary: Victimization surveys are a relevant source of information for criminological research. In Catalonia there is a long tradition in victimization surveys and Victimization Survey of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (EVAMB) is especially useful for analyzing security from an urban and metropolitan perspective. Regarding the quantification of criminal activity and victimization caused by conventional crime, this survey is a pioneer in geolocating the place of residence of the victims and the place where the victimizations occur. The article presents a brief trajectory of victimization surveys in Catalonia, focusing on the EVAMB and describing its main characteristics. In turn, with the idea of showing its potential, is presented an example of analysis that aims to determine the relationship between the spatial distribution of crime and the mobility patterns of victims in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. The results seem to indicate the importance of taking into account the mobility of the victims to better understand the risk of victimization in the different territories. This work contributes to understanding how victimization surveys are a good source of data both for the territorial analysis of crime and victimization and for rethinking public security and prevention policies.
