Una mirada histórico-jurídicaCorona Encinas, ÁlexThis paper examines the contribution of Christianism as one of the key elements in the origin of the idea of Europe, in the shaping of a series of common ethical and moral values, and, ultimately, in the emergence of a common conscience of the European reality. Therefore, the text presents some historical reflections on Christianism and the development of a common European perception, with a special emphasis on Middle Ages and Christendom. More recently, the historical view regarding the “Christian roots” of Europe has collided with certain stances at the core of the European Union, which argue for a conception of European Union distant from any religious influence. In this regard, we offer some thoughts related to the controversy surrounding the unsuccessful initiatives to establish a Constitution for Europe and about the reference to the “Christian heritage” of Europe.En el presente texto se considera la aportación del cristianismo como uno de los principales elementos en el origen de la idea de Europa, en la configuración de una serie de valores éticos y morales comunes y, en definitiva, en el surgimiento de una consciencia común de la realidad europea. Asimismo, se plantean algunas reflexiones de carácter histórico sobre el cristianismo y el desarrollo del concepto de Europa y de una visión común europea, con especial énfasis en la Edad Media y la Cristiandad medieval. Más recientemente, en el marco de la Unión Europea, esta visión histórica en torno a las “raíces cristianas” de Europa ha colisionado con ciertas posiciones que abogan por un entendimiento de la realidad comunitaria alejada de cualquier tipo de influjo o consideración de carácter religioso.
