Summary: The WTO dispute settlement system is an essential component of the rule of law in international trade. However, due to the United States blocking the appointment of new Appellate Body members this mechanism is in crisis. The aim of this paper is to investigate the European Union proposals aimed at unblocking the crisis situation. This requires first determining both the economic context in which this crisis has arisen and the United States criticism that underlies its decision to block the functioning of the Appellate Body.
