Summary: This article addresses the environmental problem of the production and generation of solid waste in Brazil, mainly linked to excess consumption. The inadequate management of waste has immediate impacts on the environment and health and contributes to climate change. Considering the limitations of the final destination options for waste, it is essential to minimize the quantities produced through reduction, reuse and recycling. In view of the institutionalization of the PNRS, and in line with the 2030 Agenda, especially the “SDG 12”, we seek to contribute to this debate, as well as to point out ways to face this serious issue, privileging the social inclusion of the collectors, responsible for carrying out a work of great environmental importance. In this study, the deductive method will be used, in addition to bibliographic and legislative research
