Summary: This work introduces the history of the Royal and Pontifical University of San Marcos in the first centuries of existence, taking as reference articles of three distinguished members of the University staff: Diego de León Pinelo, Antonio de la Calancha and José Baquíjano y Carrillo. These texts written for quite different purposes, allow us to know fundamental aspects of our University from its founding until end of 18th Century, such as the authorities, the organization of studies, finances and achievements obtained, as well as those aspects that show the role performed at university in the Genesis of the Modern State.
